Uncertainty, Why? It’s a story of Faith!
Do You still daydream?
I say daydream because the dream itself now seems impossible; a destiny just too far out of reach considering your circumstances and the context of your life.
I had a dream to play Rugby at the highest level in our land. Rugby burned fiercely inside of me. God had given me a passion for the game and the talent to play it. I was, however, never 100% certain how we (God and I) were going to use my rugby to advance His Kingdom. You see I never really gave myself or God a chance to find out.
On a cold winter’s night at the Wanderers Rugby grounds I had a severe neck injury and all the medical advice available to me through the Transvaal union (as it was called then) strongly advised me to give up the game. The choice or picture they painted for me was to play back yard cricket with my future son or show him pictures of how I used to play Rugby while lying, paralyzed, in bed. It was quite convincing, even though I had this nagging feeling in my heart that God wanted to heal me.
- The odds seemed well stacked against me and I began to believe the door to my rugby dream was closed.
- It seemed out of reach – now only a daydream.

22 So there was not a single sword or spear in the entire “army” of Israel that day, except for Saul’s and Jonathan’s. 23 The mountain pass at Michmash had meanwhile been secured by a contingent of the Philistine army.
14 A day or so later, Prince Jonathan said to his young bodyguard, “Come on, let’s cross the valley to the garrison of the Philistines.” But he didn’t tell his father that he was leaving.
No one realized that Jonathan had gone.
6 “Yes, let’s go across to those heathen,” Jonathan had said to his bodyguard. “Perhaps the Lord will help us. For it makes no difference to him how many enemy troops there are!”
- Surely this is a pipe dream if 600 soldiers were not up to taking on the Philistines? Granted, they only had two swords, but how is it possible that only two of them can overpower the philistines now with only one sword?
- Surely the odds are too much in favour of the Philistines?
- This must be a closed door!
11 When the Philistines saw them coming, they shouted, “Look! The Hebrews are crawling out of their holes!” 12 Then the men from the outpost shouted to Jonathan, “Come on up here, and we’ll teach you a lesson!”
13 So they climbed up using both hands and feet, and the Philistines fell before Jonathan, and his armour bearer killed those who came behind them. 14 They killed some twenty men in all, and their bodies were scattered over about half an acre.[a]
15 Suddenly, panic broke out in the Philistine army, both in the camp and in the field, including even the outposts and raiding parties. And just then an earthquake struck, and everyone was terrified. The vast army of Philistines began to melt away in every direction.[b] ]
20 Then Saul and all his men rushed out to the battle and found the Philistines killing each other. There was terrible confusion everywhere. Even the Hebrews who had previously gone over to the Philistine army revolted and joined in with Saul, Jonathan, and the rest of the Israelites.
- Jonathan had the faith to give God a chance to come through for him and the nation of Israel when the odds were against him; when the door certainly looked closed
- A destiny could be fulfilled
17 Years after laying down the Rugby dream, circumstances arose that allowed me to go for scans for another injury that included scans to my neck. The scans and x-rays showed trauma to my neck but that I was perfectly healed. Even though I had given up on God healing me, He had not given up on healing me. It did, however, cost me a dream, a destiny and what could have been an incredible mission with Him in the field of Rugby.
